WORK AT FORREST HILL CEMETERY

    We had a good turn-out (7) to read stones at Forrest Hill Cemetery in June. This is the last cemetery to be read in the county as our committee works to complete the books within the next year, or so.
    Another work night is scheduled for August, so bring an ink pen, some insect repellant, a clip board, shaving cream, a squeegee and some rinse water and join us at 6:30. We'd like to make a lot more progress.

OFFICERS! WE NEED OFFICERS!

    It will soon be time for the nominating committee to set up a slate of officers for 1993. If you are interested in serving in ANY capacity, please send a note to the address above or call the library and tell Lucille. The committee cannot know everyone well enough to know their individual talents and desires.
    We will also need a program chairman. I will not serve another year as president. Most officers are ready to be relieved for a year or so. HELP keep our chapter going!!

    FROM NORMA EATON: "The Ottawa County Genealogical Society has a Veterans project. If any Henry County member has any Ottawa County Veteran, please contact (Norma at address given above). "There is no cost, only if pension is sent for at the National Archives. If pension is sent for, a copy of such would be appreciated with the form used."
    Norma enclosed a copy of the form "Veterans of Ottawa County Prior to 1900" and also a list of books available from their chapter. These are available from her or by writing to our corresponding secretary. We regret that we don't have room to print such information from all chapters, so our policy is not to print lists of their publications.

CAUSES OF DEATH

    Have you ever come across a cause of death that you never heard of, or perhaps one you have heard mentioned, but have no idea what the disease was? A list of causes of death was published in the Southwest Cuyahoga OGS newsletter and reprinted in the Putnam Pastfinder. We think it is worth reprinting here with a couple of additions of our own.

AGITAUS - tossed about, disturbed mentally.
ANTROPHY OF BRAIN - excess fluid.
APOPLEXY - a malady, sudden in its attack, which arrests the powers of sense and motion, usually caused by an effusion of blood serum in the brain.
ASTHENIA - lack of strength, diminution of vital powers, debility.
BRIGHT'S DISEASE - a generic term including several forms of acute and chronic diseases of the kidney, usually associated with albumen in the urine.
CARCINOMA - cancer.
CONSUMPTION - progressive wasting away from pulmonary tuberculosis.
CHOLERA - a disorder attended with vomiting, stomach ache and cramps.
DEMENTIA - madness, insanity.
DIPHTHERIA - acute contagious disease of the heart.
DROPSY - abnormal excess of fluid.
DYSENTERY - inflammation of the large intestines.
EDEMA - see dropsy.
ENTERITIS - inflammation of the intestines.
ERSIPHELAS - inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissues.
GASTRITIS - inflammation of the coating of the stomach.
GENERAL DEBILITY - used to describe the condition of many whose weakness is the most apparent trouble.
LA GRIPPE - influenza.
LIVER GROWN - a disease of infants, possibly resulting from defects of the liver at birth, especially affecting the bile ducts. May have caused jaundice. Folk cures sometimes killed the child.
MARASMUS - often termed "tabes mescenterica," wasting away of the body, especially in young children.
MENINGITIS - inflammation of spinal cord or brain.
MILK SICKNESS - an acute disease characterized by weakness, vomiting, and constipation and caused by eating dairy products or meat from cattle poisoned by various plants. (Nancy Hanks Lincoln died of this.)
MYELITIS - inflammation of the spinal cord.
NEPHITITIS - inflammation of the kidneys.
NEURALGIA - an affection of one or more nerves, especially of the head or face.
NEURCEPHALUS - nerves, nervous disorder.
NEUROMA - tumor.
PALSY - paralysis or uncontrollable tremors of the body or limbs.
PUERPERAL FEVER - infection following childbirth.
QUINSEY - tonsillitis, swelling of the throat.
SARDOMA - malignant tumor.
SENILE DEBILITY - incident to old age.
SEPTICAEMIA - septic poisoning.
SHORT GROWTH - when a baby was considered not to be growing quickly enough.
TETANUS - disease characterized by spasm and rigidity of some or all of the voluntary muscles, usually occasioned by a wound on the surface of the body.
TUBERCULOSIS - to waste away. (Usually a lung disease.)
UREMIA - severe kidney disease.

CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE RECORDS

    We continue our listing of Civil War Discharge Records this month. These records were taken from Vol. 1 Soldier's Discharge Records at the Recorder's Office, Henry County Court House. The initials OVI refer to Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Some additional information may appear in the courthouse records such as who the company commander was and where the soldier was discharged. In the attestations accompanying the records it is not always clear whether the soldier resides in a town or township; for example, Napoleon. Records copied by Karen Sunderman.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

    You will find an appeal elsewhere in this newsletter for volunteers to serve as officers for next year. Many of you cannot serve as officers because of distance, but I am going to present you with a chance to participate in the Henry County Genealogical Society. Having served as newsletter editor for almost a year, I feel it is only fair to our most distant members to make each newsletter as informative as possible.
    The last few months that job has not been too difficult. Many of you have sent queries or other information. That helps make my job easier as well as forming contacts between those searching the same names. But, I have used all queries sent since winter (a genealogist's favorite time to write).
    If you have time to write an informative story about how you found a certain ancestor, or just another query, I would appreciate it. (Make sure it has a Henry Co. or general research connection, please!)
    About the time of the next newsletter my husband and I will be moving into the new home we are building this summer and I won't have much time to research and write for this publication. In fact, I'm already lining up help with the typing! So, I'm also asking for you, our members and readers, to help out with the content. Please send whatever you wish to submit to the address on the front cover. THANKS!
    (And for those of you who live in the area, many of the current officers wish to be relieved of their jobs. Those on the nominating committee may not know if you have a desire to serve for a year or two, so don't be shy about volunteering!)

Some time ago, member Cliff Mawer gave us some information on ELLIS ISLAND PASSENGER LISTS. This was taken from the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage Vol. XII, No. 2 - April 1989. Wish we had an update for you, but if you are traveling to New York this summer, perhaps you can check into it.
    "From 1892 to 1954 most of the 16 million immigrants to the eastern United States were processed at Ellis Island, New York, NY. The records are preserved in the National Archives, but unless the person needing information knows the name of the ship and the date of arrival, it is almost impossible to trace the immigrant. The Ellis Island Restoration Commission has been formed to computerize the passenger lists so that any name will be readily available. The Commission has set 1992 for the completion of the project; anyone visiting Ellis Island will be able to discover information on the computer."

FROM THE DESHLER FLAG

29 Jan 1897 - Born Tuesday afternoon to Mrs. C. S. Long, a bright little girl. This makes three girls for our friend Charley.

12 Feb 1897 - On Friday evening of last week, Dr. Gehrett operated on Mr. J. S. Shepherd of McClure for a tumor on his right shoulder. The patient is at the Hotel Wayne, under the care of Odd Fellows, and is getting along nicely.
    Mr. Joseph Holmes, of Weston, and Grandpa Geeson have traded farms, whereby Mr. Holmes comes into possession of the Geeson place, just south of the brick school house west of (Deshler).
    Miss Carry Lape, of Chicago, is visiting her parents; also Mr. & Mrs. D. Bish (of Deshler).
    Ephriam Lytle and sister, Anna, of Townwood, spent Sunday with their parents here. (Deshler)
    Mr. William Kern was called to Crawford Co. last week by the death of his father.
    Mrs. Jamison and daughter, of Lima, are guests of C. S. Long and family. Mrs. Jamison is a sister of Mrs. Long.
    Married, at the M. E. parsonage, Deshler,. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1897, by Rev. J. T. Pope, Mr. Clifford Brown, of Wilmot, IN, and Miss Doretta Smith of Dayton, OH.
    Died, on Sunday, Feb. 7, 1897, at the home of her parents, Minnie Loretta, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Durham, aged 2 months and 17 days. The funeral was held at the home of the grandparents, Henry and Mrs. Mohr.
    Mr. Pace, living southwest of town, reports a boy at his home.

19 Feb 1897 - HAMLER - Miss Minnie Precht is visiting with her parents, near Okolona.
    Little Marie Lindorfer has been quite sick the past few weeks with chickenpox.

    DESHLER - Mrs. Walz, of Delta, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Dr. Norris.
    J. B. Hill, and wife, of Piqua, uncle of Rufus Hill, were visiting him over Sunday.
    Fred and Mrs. Stuve, of Hamler, spent Sunday with the latter's parents, Rufus and Mrs. Hill, east of town.
    Mr. Howard Young. B & 0 agent at Auburn Jct., IN, was in town over Sunday, visiting his parents.
    Mr. Henry Gehrett, of Napoleon, is the guest of his sons this week. Mr. Gehrett is an old resident of Henry Co., and has seen many wonderful changes take place in and around Deshler.
    Mr. & Mrs. William Myrice, Sr., were called to Jerry City last week to the death bed of their daughter, Mrs. Maggie Banky, who died on the 4th. The deceased leaves a husband and two children.
    Will Smith, a telegraph operator at Leipsic Junction for several months past, will leave for Cuba in a few days, where he has secured a position as operator on the staff of General Gomez, the insurgent leader.
    Mr. Frank Dix, a former resident of this county, but now living in Delaware Co., was here last week and bought a car load of stock cattle, which he shipped to his home last Saturday. Mr. Dix is well known in Richfield Twp. He left here 15 years ago, and was surprised at the improvement made in that time.
