    Seeking info concerning the ancestors, siblings and relatives of brothers Fred and Henry Schroeder originally of Visselhovede (Heelsen), Hannover, Germany. Parents were Johan Fredrich Schroder and Anna Maria Dirks. Fred known to have traveled to Henry Co. in 1872 to stay with relatives, possibly H. Rohrs. Fred worked with brother of H. Rohrs in vinyards on Kelly's Island until 1880, then moved to Orange Co., CA.

    John BALLMER, of McClure was a Custar visitor last week.
    Dr. O. M. McMURRAY informs us he has rented his farm west of town to Mr. WHITAKER and will pay his entire attention to the veterinary profession, he being a graduate from the Ontario college.
    Mr. Jack ORWIG, who has been conducting a restaurant next to the bank, closed business Monday and shipped his goods back to Portage.
    Miss Susie KINNEY, of Portage, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. ORWIG.
    G. B. SMITH of Laramie, WY, spent Thurs. with his sister, Mrs. F. W. DOWNHAM.
    Mr. Fred SALIERS, of Tiffin, was the guest of his sister, Mrs. Cora WILLIAMS, north of town, Monday.
    Mr. BUCK, the new clothier, who locates in the new Homer HOUSE room, moved his family here this week from Milton Center and occupies the VOGT property on E. Main St.
    J. L. ARNOLD, of Hamler, had his store entered through a back window for the 'steenth time in a year. The thieves carried off nearly a hundred dollars worth of stuff.

    Tues. Mr. James LONGBRAKE received a message from Muncie, IN requesting him to come at once if he wished to see his daughter alive.
    A newspaper dispatch reads: "Mar. 16-- P. O. MULL and wife and Marion NEEDHAM and wife occupy a house together in the suburb of Whitley. Today the odor of natural gas was discovered and a search for it with a lighted match resulted in the front of the building being blown out. All four people were badly injured. Mrs. MULL cannot recover." Mr. P. O. MULL is a brother of Mrs. John BRADFORD, and his mother, who has been making her home in Deshler, left last week for Muncie to pay her son and daughter, Mrs. NEEDHAM, a visit, and grave fears are entertained for her safety.
    Mr. and Mrs. S. COTTINGHAM spent Sat. with J. W. COTTINGHAM at Leipsic.
    Miss Nettle SALIERS, of Seneca Co., is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Cora WILLIAMS.
    Mr. T. W. BLUE, of McCinville, TN, visited his sister, Mrs. OSENBAUGH Sunday.
    Mrs. J. W. OVERMEYER, of Lindsey, OH was the guest of her aunt, Mrs. P. T. MICHAEL.
    Charley VANLUE and wife are in town this week visiting friends. His father and family have left Ottawa and gone to Flint, MI, where they will engage in business. Charley and wife will join them in a few days.
    Mr. Geo. NEWTON, one of Perrysburg's oldest citizens has been visiting his daughters, Mrs. J. DONOVAN Jr. and Mrs. Homer STEVENSON, the past week.

    Charley WORKMAN, formerly of Deshler is in jail on the charge of forgery.
    Died, on Fri., March 19, at her home in this city, after a long siege with consumption, Mrs. Charity YOUNG, wife of Mr. George YOUNG, aged 24 yrs. Her husband and three children, ages 27 months to 10 years, survive.
    Election of officers at the M. E. Church are as follows: Supt. E. J. KENDALL, Asst. Supt. L. M. BERGMAN, Sec. Q. J. EARP, Asst. Sec. John DAVIS, Chorister, W. B. GARD, Ida MICHAEL, Bessie VOGT, Treas. Mrs. E. N. WARDEN.
    Mr. Levi BURGOON, of near Hoytville, died last week of lung fever, aged 52 years.

EPIDEMICS

    Summer was a time of diseases caused by polluted water. In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this information might help. If your ancestors didn't die during an epidemic, they may have moved away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States were listed in our July-August 2002 Newsletter. One point not mentioned in that newsletter is that more people were hospitalized in WWI from the influenza epidemic than wounds. US Army training camps became death camps, with 80% death rate in some camps.

 TIDBITS

--Records for Ohio Veterans of the War of 1812 are available in some Ohio libraries. Some books to ask for are: Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812, and Document Transcriptions of the War of 1812 in the Northwest. Some libraries may have collections of papers pertaining to William Henry Harrison. Kentucky Soldiers of the War of 1812 contains some regiments that were recruited in Ohio. Don't forget to ask for books about the Battle of Lake Erie. Ancestry.com has produced a CD entitled "Military Records: War of 1812 Muster Rolls."

--The 1840 census records names and ages of pensioners for Revolutionary or military service. The 1890 census includes a special enumeration of Union Army veterans and widows of the Civil War. Information includes rank, company, regiment, enlistment and discharge dates, length of service, address and nature of disability.

--The 1910 census indicates whether a person was a survivor of the Union or Confederate army or navy. The 1930 census notes military service in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, the Philippine insurrection, Boxer Rebellion, Mexican Expedition and World War I.

JUST FOR FUN

    WARNING -- GENEALOGY POX VERY CONTAGIOUS TO ADULTS
    Symptoms: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates, and places. Patient has strange, faraway look in eyes, and is sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking though records at libraries and courthouses. Has compulsion to write letters and e-mails. Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins and remote, desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls. Hides phone bills from spouse. Mumbles to self. Disease is not fatal but gets progressively worse.
    There is no known cure. Treatment: Medication is useless. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines, and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone [and lots of cupboard/file space!]. The usual nature of this disease is that the sicker the patient gets, the more he or she enjoys it.
